This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing

Note from the Artists: The stories of these girls who are triplets, who are in some ways the same and in some ways quite different, deeply resonate with our ensemble. Some of us have loved this story for a long time, some of us jumped on board and fell in love hard and fast (the way a good chocolate cake, or an egg in a nest, or an old cassette tape can melt your heart). As we move through our own stories, these characters’ journeys remind us to continue to conquer oceans, plant deep roots, remember where we came from, and keep telling (mostly true) stories.

Using a cross-collaborative devising model, our ensemble crafted the piece without a singular director, choosing to share responsibility for staging and producing the show.

We approached our devising process with three provocations:

-How might we disrupt the traditional director-performer hierarchy of a rehearsal space by employing feminist pedagogy within a cross-collaboratory devising model?

-How might we invite young people into our creative process to honor their voices and artistic impulses?

-What new possibilities for TYA might emerge when collaborators commit to building a rehearsal space on a foundation of trust, authenticity and support?
